Tim Russert's Death puts coronary disease awareness on front page

Just like Tim Russert, my dad died of a massive heart attack.

He died in his sleep and he was only 64.  And he had no history of heart disease although he had high blood pressure and a very type A personality.

With Tim Russert's sudden death, coronary disease is getting front page coverage.

But did you know that heart disease doesn't just kill men?

Women are just as susceptible to heart disease as are men.  Studies show that heart disease causes more deaths in women than all the cancer's combined.  So for all you women out there, what's good for the goose... applies here too.

I'm constantly worried about my diet and maintain a healthy diet routine (at least 5 out of the 7 days, weekends being the toughest to stick to a healthy diet routine).  But I must admit,  for the past two months I've fallen off the exercise wagon.  There's no excuse for it other than pure and simple laziness.

Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty busy what with working full time while running a full time business. But I know that I can still find 45 minutes to exercise. That's why I'm saying it's pure laziness that's preventing me from working out.

It's just that after working out with a personal trainer for the past year, I just felt like I needed a break from including yet another 45 minutes of sweating to an already grueling schedule.

But now with Tim Russert's death making front page news, I've got to get back into my exercise routine so that I don't end up prematurely dead like him.  After all, I've got a few additional black marks against me. In addition to family history, I'm also a super Type A personality.

So! I'll be back on that tread mill tomorrow, making sure that I get them heart muscles pumping. And I hope that by maintaining a good balance of diet and exercise, I ward off death by a few years.

After all, death is inevitable but by making some simple changes, hopefully it won't come for a while.

Coffee for longevity?
Nipa          Tuesday, June 17th, 2008          Comments :4
I only drink one cup of coffee per day and that too, “girly” coffee or at least that’s what my hubby calls it. That’s because I drink the Hazelnut flavored coffee made by General Foods International.

Rising Oil Prices and Record Profits for Oil Companies!
Bill Kalmar          Tuesday, June 10th, 2008          Comments :0
The price of gasoline continues to escalate and of course the oil companies will be announcing record profits again and claim that they are doing their best to hold costs in check. The explanations of why we are being gauged at the pump should all be prefaced with the song from Gilligan's Island: “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale”.

Red Wings are Stanley Cup Champions - Again

If you caught game 5 on Monday night between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburg Penguins, you’d know what I’m saying when I say “Heart Palpitations”. I mean SERIOUS heart palpitations for Red Wings fans when the Penguins tied the game with only 34 seconds remaining. And then the game went into triple overtime and the Red Wings lost the game

Wow, is it a great day for the USA or what? By winning all the needed delegates, Barack Obama becomes the 1st African American to win the Democratic Nomination. That's diversity at it's best in the greatest country in the world. So first, congratulations to Senator Obama on winning that.

Hoosier Metal Madness?

Motoring across the Midwest on our recent trip to St. Louis to spend some time with our four grandchildren afforded us an opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of “Americana”. What caught my eye though as we traversed the highways and byways were the myriad license plates from the various states. In my opinion Georgia has the best looking plate followed closely by Florida. We even observed a Hawaii plate and I marveled at how challenging that trip must have been for its occupant.

It's business but....it still hurts!

I'm a business owner and I am pretty savvy in that I know that in business, we win some and lose some. And most times when I don't win a project, I pragmatically say, "ah well, it wasn't meant to be".

Michael Bloomberg and Hampton Inn

Motoring to New York recently to watch the Detroit Tigers play the Yankees at the revered Yankee Stadium taught me two very important life lessons: Mayor Michael Bloomberg is genuinely a man of the people; and when it comes to height standards at a national hotel chain, size does matter. Permit me to explain.

A Bud Lite Day!

Several years ago in a frigid January, my wife Mary and I were traveling to Chicago for a weekend getaway with our three children. Our plan was to book a hotel with an indoor pool and then visit the various museums in the city.

Starbucks Time for Time Out!

The announcement from Starbucks that it would close for three hours on February 26 to retrain about 135,000 in-store employees sent shudders through the thousands of coffee fanatics in the nation. Could it be that java aficionados would have to forego their venti, decaf, no foam, double vanilla, light whip extra caramel with cinnamon on top, expresso frappuccino? Oh, the humanity!
